Curl type 2: Wavy hair
Wavy hair belongs to curl type 2. It is characterized by gentle waves and a natural texture that gives the hair movement and volume. Within curl type 2, a distinction is made between 2a-2c waves:
2a: loose, wavy structure
2b: More defined waves with an S-pattern
2c: clear, tight waves from root to tip
The two most common problems with wavy hair:
1. They are not really understood as a "curly type", which means that the wrong care and styling products are used
2. The hair falls out quickly (usually because of problem 1)
In 6 steps to wavy hair
1. Clean scalp & hair very well
Deposits and build-up from care and styling products are a problem for all hair types, but especially for waves. Since we work with a looser structure, product residues can weigh down the hair, causing the waves to hang out. Therefore, choose a very good cleansing, mild shampoo and, if necessary, use the "double cleansing" method (wash twice in a row).
2. Choose a weightless (deep) conditioner
In the next step, choose a conditioner or a deep conditioner that nourishes but does not weigh down the hair. You can rotate between a regular conditioner and a deep conditioner. Only detangle your hair when it is wet and with conditioner in it.
3. Use a leave-in conditioner
That's right, waves also need a leave-in conditioner or curl cream. A leave-in is the basis of your wave styling and is the first step in the styling routine. This not only helps to detangle the hair, it also defines the individual strands. Here too, choose a product that nourishes the hair but does not weigh it down unnecessarily. Here you can find our tried and tested wave leave-ins:
4. Choose a strong curl gel
Before you use a curling mousse, we recommend you first use a curling gel, and a strong one at that. Why?
In order to fix the looser curl structure, we need a lot of hold. This way, your waves won't fall out so quickly over the course of the day.
5. Curl foam for more grip
A mousse is also recommended for wavy hair, not because it gives a lot of hold, but because it increases the grip in the hair. Apply it before or after curling gel.
6. Optional: Use a hairspray on wet hair
Sounds crazy, because when you think of conventional hairspray, you think of sticky hair and you especially don't think about spraying it on wet hair .
But that's exactly what we suggest you do today to get that extra hold so you can go one or two days longer between washes.
And don't worry: our hairsprays in the shop are formulated for curls and waves and do not dry out the hair or make it sticky.

Wellen FAQ
Should you apply styling products to wet or towel-dried hair?
Always apply your styling products to wet hair. Otherwise, your hair can quickly become frizzy and the product will not be absorbed optimally by the hair. Excess water can be removed at any time using the micro-plopping method.
How much product should you use per styling product?
If you don't know how much to use, the spoon technique is a good idea: Take a teaspoon of the product and then see how your hair feels. If you were able to distribute it everywhere and your hair already had a nice slip, then that may have been enough. Start with a leave-in with a little less product and build up as needed. If you haven't used enough curl gel, you'll quickly notice a frizzy result. Next time, take another teaspoon and you can build up the amount and dose it well.
What should I look out for when using curl gels?
1. Always apply all styling products to wet hair.
2. Holding ingredients leave a clear film on dry hair to give the waves hold and definition. In the world of curls, we also call this "gelcast" . The hard layer around the individual strands of hair makes the hair feel as if it was frozen. We simply have to knead this gelcast out of the hair as soon as the hair is 100% dry and conjure up the defined, soft, bouncy waves.
Are there any tools that can help me with styling?
Yes, there are some tools that are very helpful when caring for your waves to achieve the best results. We recommend a curling brush, a curling towel and a spray bottle to start with. Here you can find the perfect set to get you started.
