Curl type 3: Curly hair

Curly hair belongs to curl type 3. The characteristic curls and spirals give curly hair a natural bounce and volume. From lush waves to tight corkscrew curls, this curl type shows a diverse range. A distinction is made between subcategories 3a-3c:

3a: large, well-defined rings, diameter of up to 2 cm
3b: typical corkscrew curls, curls are smaller and have a diameter of up to 1cm
3c: even tighter curls, maximum diameter is 0.5cm

The three most common problems with curly hair:

1. No holding products are used
2. The wrong care and styling products are used
3. No styling techniques are used

Should you apply styling products to wet or towel-dried hair?

Always apply your styling products to wet hair. Otherwise, your hair can quickly become frizzy and the product will not be absorbed optimally by the hair. Excess water can be removed at any time using the micro-plopping method.

How much product should you use per styling product?

If you don't know how much to use, the spoon technique is a good idea: Take a teaspoon of the product and then see how your hair feels. If you were able to distribute it everywhere and your hair already had a nice slip, then that may have been enough. Start with a leave-in with a little less product and build up as needed. If you haven't used enough curl gel, you'll quickly notice a frizzy result. Next time, take another teaspoon and you can build up the amount and dose it well.

What tools do you need?

We recommend a curling brush, a curling towel and a spray bottle to get you started. Here you can find a tool set that is perfect for getting started.

What should I look out for when using curl gels?

1. Always apply to wet hair.
2. Holding ingredients leave a clear film on dry hair. In the world of curls, we call this "gelcast" . This is a hard layer around the individual strands of hair, the hair feels frozen and/or looks "wet". This gelcast is a very good sign of hold and definition. We simply have to knead this gelcast out of the hair as soon as the hair is 100% dry & thus conjure up the defined, soft, bouncy waves.
