Airy curls in summer have something light and joie de vivre about them. However, the summer months can also be quite tough on us curly-haired people.

It's common knowledge that the sun is bad for your hair. How can you protect your curls in the summer ? We have the 9 best tips for you.

UV radiation, sun & sea: nightmare for curly-haired people

Unlike curls in winter , where they fight against the cold, in summer they are vulnerable to UV radiation. This damages the hair's natural protective layer and curls are exposed to the sun for long periods of time without protection. This damages the hair structure.

The result is straw-like and brittle curls. Just like our skin, we also need to protect our hair from the sun.

In the hot season, our hair care should therefore be tailored to the sun and sea.

  • Salt water damages hair, especially curls , because salt has bleaching properties and also dries out the hair.
  • To make matters worse, the often high humidity in summer can also encourage frizz .

How to protect your curls in summer: 9 tips

We want to show you how you can optimally care for your curls in the summer despite all adversities and protect them from sun, wind and sea.

That's why we've put together our best tips for curly hair care in the summer months. Because the time is ripe for summer curls to dream about!

1. Use a hair mask

Use a hair treatment or hair mask regularly to ensure that your hair is sufficiently supplied with nutrients even in hot weather.

  • Curls in particular often lack moisture anyway.
  • Sun and heat also deprive them of their moisture, so you should pay more attention to adequate moisturizing during the hot months.

Be sure to choose deep conditioners with natural ingredients that care for the curls but do not leave a heavy film behind.

Water-insoluble, synthetic components such as silicones form a film over the curls and should be removed from your shopping list right from the start. Build-up alert!

Silicones build up over time and make your hair heavier . Additionally, nutrients and moisture can no longer reach the hair and your hair slowly becomes weaker.

If you care for your hair using the Curly Girl method , water-insoluble silicones are taboo anyway!

2. Drink enough fluids

As simple as it sounds, it is just as effective: make sure you drink enough in the summer . Sun and hot temperatures cause your body to dehydrate more quickly , as you sweat more in the warm months and more water evaporates from the surface of your skin in high temperatures.

If the body is dehydrated over a longer period of time, this not only leads to

  • Headache,
  • circulatory problems
  • and malaise,
  • but also has negative effects on skin and hair.

Your complexion will look dull, tired and dry and your locks will no longer be able to receive enough nutrients. As a result, if your hair is not sufficiently hydrated over the summer, it can become limp and dry .

However, if you regularly reach for a glass of water , it will not only keep your skin plump and rosy, but your curls will also stay soft and supple if they are well supplied with nutrients.

Expert tip: But be careful - unfortunately, liquid doesn’t help with “dead” hair.

3. Put your care products in the fridge

Yes, you read that right: put your hair care products in the fridge in summer . Natural products in particular, which do not contain any artificial additives or preservatives, spoil more quickly in warm temperatures.

Also, avoid leaving your hair care products directly in the sun. This can alter their consistency and reduce their effectiveness , as some nutrients are sensitive to heat.

Natural products in particular like it cool and dark. This extends their shelf life and you can enjoy your hair care products for longer.

4. Avoid direct sunlight

Intense UV radiation is harmful to your hair . Although your curls won't get sunburnt, the sun's rays will make your curls brittle and dry .

If your curls are exposed to the sun intensively and for a long time , for example on holiday, they can even

  • bleach the color pigments of your hair
  • and the keratin structure can be damaged.

Therefore, protect your curly hair from direct sunlight on very summer days by wearing a sun hat or staying in the shade.

We also have various heat protection products on offer. For example, our Miracle Shield by Curls Smith . The product offers complete protection against UV rays and other damage such as hair breakage caused by heat (up to 230 °C).

We have also listed all the products here that protect your curls from heat damage and UV radiation.

Dyeing or bleaching curls: an additional burden in summer

Dyeing or bleaching puts additional strain on the structure of your hair during the peak summer months and puts even more strain on your curls in addition to UV exposure.

Therefore, protect your curls with suitable UV protection sprays . Be careful with shampoos with UV protection , as many products are full of chemicals.

However, if you want to care for your hair in the healthiest and most natural way possible, then prefer natural shampoos and curl care products with high-quality, nourishing oils that moisturize your curls. This way, your hair is optimally prepared against intense sun rays.

Protect curls from the sun with home remedies

Protecting your hair from the sun with home remedies is possible, for example, with vegetable oils. Possible options include

  • coconut oil,
  • Avocado-,
  • olive
  • or argan oil – to name just a few.

Please note, however, that although vegetable oils have a high content of vitamins and natural antioxidants, they only have a low, natural sun protection factor! (SPF 3-5) This is not sufficient sun protection, especially for sensitive or lighter skin and hair types!

In addition, applying pure oil on hot summer days can potentially weigh down your curls too much and also leave your hair feeling uncomfortable.

Special hair oils for curls are still a wonderful thing, but in summer you should prefer products with light formulations.

5. Skip washing your hair every now and then

In summer, choose lighter care products or skip washing your hair altogether from time to time. By “washing your hair” we basically mean the complete procedure with shampoo and conditioner.

Curlies in particular do well by using the No Poo or Low Poo method once a week .

To do this, alternate your normal hair washing with a co-wash day, for example. During this, the hair is washed with a special, particularly gently formulated co-wash conditioner , such as our CURLSMITH Curl Quenching Conditioning . This contains only a very small amount of detergent substances and is super gentle on your curls.

Also remember that in summer you won't have to contend with dry heating air and icy temperatures, where your curls will generally tolerate very rich care and even slightly heavier oils.

For light, airy summer hair care , lighter conditioners and curl creams are often much better suited.

6. Beware of chlorine: protect your curls in the swimming pool

Chlorinated water damages your hair - just like salt water. The drier your hair is, the more likely it is to absorb chlorine or salt and store it in your hair.

In the worst case, this can lead to unsightly discoloration and dry out the structure of your hair even more.

It is therefore best not to submerge your curls under water , but to tie them up in a bun or high ponytail before swimming. If you still want to dive, it is best to wet your hair with normal, clear water first.

You can also add a little hair oil to the lengths of your hair. This will saturate your hair and prevent as much salt or chlorine from penetrating your hair while you are bathing.

By the way , chlorine and salt water, especially in combination with UV rays from the sun, are a particularly nasty combination that can bleach hair and damage the hair structure.

After swimming or diving, it is important to carefully rinse the chlorine or salt water out of your hair. Your curls will also appreciate a little extra care after swimming. For example, you can use a leave-in conditioner for curls.

7. Prevent your curls from drying out

Sun, heat, sea water, the wind in a convertible and chlorine in the pool - all of this takes its toll on your curls and poses a real challenge in summer. The cuticle and oil layer of your hair is particularly attacked in summer by the above-mentioned influences.

It therefore makes sense to use special after-sun shampoos and conditioners during the hot season, which provide the hair with an additional portion of moisture and thus protect it from summer environmental influences .

If you follow the Curly Girl method and want to use silicone and sulfate-free products even in summer, you should still use a gentle cleansing shampoo immediately after your vacation or a day at the sea or pool to ensure that all residues of chlorine and salt are thoroughly washed out of your curls.

8. Let your curls air dry

The heat generated when blow-drying your hair will dry out your curls even more. So, in the hot months, avoid using this extra heat and let your hair air dry instead.

In warm temperatures, this can be done in a short time. The same applies here: Do not expose your hair to unnecessary UV radiation, especially when it is sensitive and wet, and do not let it dry in the blazing sun; instead, stay in the shade. Other heat treatments such as straightening irons or curling irons are also not good for your hair, especially in summer .

If you don't want to do without a hairdryer, use a diffuser to distribute the airflow well and set the hairdryer to a lukewarm setting. A special heat protection spray is also a good idea. The CURLSMITH Miracle Shield Spray is very popular.

9. Avoid products containing glycerin in extreme humidity

During very extreme and very hot summer days, avoid products that contain glycerin . In high humidity, which we often have in the humid and warm months, glycerin can remove additional moisture from the hair.

Glycerin has high water-binding properties and in bad cases or in certain weather conditions, the glycerin literally sucks the moisture out of the hair.

In and of itself, glycerin - a natural humectant - is actually very good for your curls. However, when it is particularly hot and humid, the ingredient can have the opposite effect.
